Statement
Jake Harvey has two passions: sculpture and fishing. A specialist in dry fly fishing, he has represented Scotland internationally on five separate occasions. The meditative aspect of fishing informs Harvey's approach to
sculpture at a profound level. Working in stone and cast iron, he imbues his sculpture with a stillness and a sophisticated Zen-like simplicity based on archaeological, natural and man-made forms.
Although working in Scotland and continuously exploring Scottish symbols, Harvey considers himself an internationalist. He has travelled extensively to Greece, India, Japan and Central America, exploring forms and techniques that have influenced his work in a variety of ways. He carves in granite, basalt and Kilkenny limestone, often placing the beautiful abstract form on forged steel bases that can be set indoors or outside within a landscape. Whether working in stone or steel, his formal language has an elegant, charged simplicity and a pronounced sensuality that communicates with peoples from all cultures.
And how can we leave out that Jake Harvey can now add to his list of awards and accolades the 2004 Fly Fishing Champion of Great Britain! |
