Georgia Papageorge
Rift
12 September to 12 October 2006
Georgia Papageorge's new work is the result of a remarkable journey undertaken in January 2006. Starting in South Africa, her route explored the Great East African Rift Valley as far as northern Tanzania. The Rift Valley is a spectacular formation, which occurred approximately 20 million years ago. It is the greatest visible tear on the earth's surface and is a powerful metaphor, in Georgia Papageorge's view, for the political, social and ecological upheavals which continue to disrupt the continent. This show is an artist's passionate expression of the human desire for unity and healing against the recent background of schism and waste and the far historical facts of terrific geological force. The works employ both new and old media to distil the inherent poetry, the statistical and geographical facts and the journey's psychological force into Papageorge's land based art.
Exhibition accompanied by illustrated catalogue with texts by the artist, Laurel Reuter and Marta Silva Maria Mantovani.
